JSP Orders Blast Furnace Gas Injection System to Enhance Green Credentials and Reduce OPEX
- Supports transition toward green steel production by lowering blast furnace CO2 emissions
- Utilizes surplus syn-gas and reduces blast furnace coal utilization
- Improves operating costs and lowers cost per ton of hot metal
In May 2024, Jindal Steel and Power (JSP) placed an order with Primetals Technologies for the engineering of a new Hydrogen-Bearing Syn-Gas Injection System and site advisory services during the installation and commissioning phase. This includes the integration of the new system into the existing Primetals Technologies Level 2 automation solution.
By replacing part of the traditional carbonaceous fuels with hydrogen, JSP will reduce the CO2 emissions from the blast furnace. The new gas injection system will utilize surplus syn-gas generated from the coal gasification plant at the site and as a result reduce the carbon fuel rate. In addition to improving the green credentials of the blast furnace, the operating costs will reduce, lowering the cost per ton of hot metal.
Production Excellence
The new system will be added to blast furnace No. 1 at the plant in Angul, India. The blast furnace was originally designed, installed, and commissioned by Primetals Technologies in 2017. With a dedicated and experienced blast furnace team the operation of the furnace has gone from strength to strength and in early 2023 JSP achieved a record daily output of over 12,000 tons.
This order reinforces Primetals Technologies as a leading blast furnace technology provider and in particular demonstrates how a blast furnace can be improved and refined to help reduce emissions while maintaining outstanding operational performance.
Leading Integrated Steel Manufacturer
JSP is one of the leading steel producers in India with a turnover of more than 7.6 billion dollars.
