PLTCM Modernization by Primetals Technologies Future-Proofs Baosteel’s Operations
- Upgrade of electrics and automation systems for pickling line and tandem cold mill (PLTCM) ensures Baosteel will be able to meet current and future production needs
- Extensive digitalization solution supported by a remarkable 63 live cameras placed at the line streamlines the production process
- Implementation scheduled for completion in early 2026
Recently, Primetals Technologies has received an order for an extensive modernization of Chinese steel producer Baosteel’s PLTCM at its Baoshan plant in Shanghai province, China. The scope includes the supply and implementation of comprehensive electrics and automation systems, such as Level 1 automation, measuring equipment, digital assistant systems, and motors and drives. A key component of the project is the installation of a Central Operation Cockpit (COC), which will provide a bird’s-eye view of the entire production line.
Upgrade to Future-Proof PLTCM Line
Originally built in 1998 to produce tinplate, the PLTCM is being upgraded to ensure Baosteel’s operations remain efficient and competitive. In addition to the new automation system, the project includes new measurement equipment systems and customer-supplied mechanical equipment for the entry section, a welding machine, a scale breaker, pickling tanks, a side trimmer, and new work-roll drive trains for stand No. 4 and 5. The modernization is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2026.
COC Backed by 63 Live Cameras
The highly innovative operational system Central Operation Cockpit (COC) enables a single operator to control multiple plant sections, reducing the need for manual intervention in the production process. This system enhances productivity, stabilizes production, and ensures reproducible, high-quality end-products. At Baosteel’s Baoshan plant, the COC will be supported by 63 live cameras, including three equipped with integrated fire detection technology. Baosteel’s new COC will integrate several digital assistant systems, such as automated coil identification, strip position identification, and side trimming scrap detection.
The World’s Largest Steel Producer
A part of the China Baowu Steel Group Corporation, a Fortune Global 500 enterprise, Baosteel is the world’s largest steel producer. The company operates multiple plants across China, including locations in Shanghai, Wuhan, Meishan, and Zhanjiang. Its product portfolio encompasses a wide range of flat and long products, including carbon, low-alloyed, alloyed, and silicon steel grades for use in various applications.
Primetals Technologies will modernize Baosteel’s PLTCM located in Baoshan.
The upgrade includes a comprehensive digitalization solution with a Central Operation Cockpit (COC) and several digital assistant systems.
