Primetals Technologies Receives Innovation Award for HYFOR from Austrian Government
Primetals Technologies has recently received the “National Price for Innovation” from the Austrian government. According to the Austrian government’s press release, hydrogen-based fine-ore reduction (HYFOR) is a radical direct reduction process poised to become widely applicable soon. HYFOR is recognized as the world’s first direct reduction process for iron ore fines that does not require any prior agglomeration steps.

New Eco Slide Discs at hot-strip mill in South Korea reduce wear and maintenance-related costs
South Korean steel producer Hyundai Steel has recently implemented Eco Slide Discs from Primetals Technologies at its steel plant in the city of Dangjin, located in the Western part of South Korea. Hyundai Steel has now reached maintenance intervals ranging from six weeks to several months. This dramatic improvement has resulted in an equally significant reduction of maintenance-related expenditures.

Primetals Technologies pioneers computer-vision-based artificial intelligence to reduce downtime at thyssenkrupp
Primetals Technologies has implemented a digital assistant for detecting strip cross cracks at thyssenkrupp Hohenlimburg’s medium-wide hot-strip mill in Hagen, Germany. This digital assistant is Primetals Technologies first-ever computer-vision-based solution designed for its specific purpose. The main benefits for thyssenkrupp are a reduction in downtime and wear related to the rolls of the hot strip mill.

Primetals Technologies’ modernization of automation systems at roughing mill boosts production
German steel producer BGH Edelstahlwerke has recently signed the preliminary acceptance certificate (PAC) with Primetals Technologies for the modernization of an automation system at roughing mill No. 2 in its long-rolling plant located in Freital, Germany. The modernization project was executed within a limited time frame, and the new automation solution has been in operation since July 2023. Well-thought-out, standardized, and adaptable technology as well as an experienced project team made it possible to meet the tight deadline.

World’s first 3-strand continuous slab caster in operation, forging path to significant savings in CAPEX and OPEX
In September 2023, the world’s first 3-strand continuous slab caster was implemented at Chinese steel producer Tangshan Donghua Iron and Steel Enterprise Group’s site in Tangshan, Hebei province, China. The machine achieves significantly higher production capacity than a 2-strand caster while requiring 50 percent less space than the comparable conventional configuration of two 2-strand casters.
