Following the recent approval of investment funds, thyssenkrupp is now forging ahead with implementation of the projects under its Strategy 20-30. The greater part of the contracts – revamp of the casting-rolling line, rebuild of an existing continuous caster, both in Duisburg, and construction of a new double reversing mill in Bochum – have now been awarded to Primetals Technologies Ltd., a world leading engineering and plant construction company for the metals industry.

Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH has commissioned Primetals Technologies with the replacement of the existing cycloconverter drive system for the crop shear installed on the finishing mill of the Salzgitter (Germany) production site. The aim of the project is to maintain the availability of the finishing mill by replacing the obsolete cycloconverter drive with a new cycloconverter drive. When replacing the existing cycloconverter drive system, the customer's request is realized to build the new system switchable in parallel to the existing cycloconverter in order to ensure a risk-free replacement with short downtime. The project is scheduled to be completed in November 2021.

Primetals Technologies has contracted with Kaptan Demir Çelik (Kaptan Iron & Steel), part of the Kaptan Group, to supply a complete wire rod outlet in Marmara Ereğlisi, Turkey. The new mill will expand Kaptan’s portfolio to include such value-added products as coiled rebar, fine grain rebar with low alloy costs, welding wire, austenitic stainless steel and cold heading grades to serve domestic and export markets. Commissioning of the new mill is expected in mid-2022.

Dubai, February 28, 2021

Mikhailovsky HBI, which was jointly established by USM and Mikhailovsky GOK (part of Metalloinvest), signed a contract with Primetals Technologies and consortium partner Midrex Technologies, Inc. to supply a new Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) Plant in Zheleznogorsk, Kursk region, Russia. The plant is designed to produce 2.08 million metric tons of HBI per year. Latest design features ensure reduced energy consumption and environmental impact. The contract includes engineering, supplies and advisory services. Startup is expected in the first half of 2024.

In December 2020, the VOD (Vacuum Oxygen Decarburization) plant, upgraded from an existing VD (Vacuum Degassing) plant by Primetals Technologies at the Dilovası meltshop of Turkish steel producer Çolakoğlu Metalurji A.S. (Çolakoğlu) received the Final Acceptance Certificate. With a heat size of 295 metric tons, the VOD is the largest worldwide. The aim of the modernization project was to enable the production of special steels, like IF grades, ULC grades or stainless steels. This helps Çolakoğlu to broaden its product range and enter additional markets. Immediately after start-up, for the first time in Turkey, stainless steel grades 304 and 304L were produced with the aid of the new VOD plant.
