Primetals Technologies has been contracted by Acciaierie Venete S.p.A. for the modernization of the finishing train of the rolling mill installed in Mura (BS), Italy. The project comprises the replacement of eight existing housing-type rolling stands with modern housing-less type Red Ring Series 5 units, which are lighter and more conveniently movable from the rolling line to the workshop and vice versa. The new Red Ring stands will allow significantly shorter change times, and will make the maintenance operations easier and quicker. The series 5 of the Red Ring stands offers a prolonged lifetime of wear components. Existing rolling rolls and guiding equipment will be reutilized.

Primetals Technologies has successfully revamped electrics and automation systems at the Presidente Vargas Steelworks of Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN) in Volta Redonda, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. The electrics and automation systems of a RH degassing plant, a ladle furnace and the common alloy system were replaced with new versions. The RH plant and the ladle furnace were brought back into operation within only five months of order signing.

In July 2020, EVRAZ NTMK, a Russian steel producer, awarded Primetals Technologies an order to upgrade process optimization of the four BOF converters in its Nizhnij Tagil plant in Russia. The intelligent software from Primetals Technologies will replace the existing Level 2. Currently, the converter operators frequently have to intervene manually. The new process optimization solution offers dynamic, physical models with greater computational accuracy, and will allow improved converter operation, providing optimal converter production control across all shifts. The standardized mode of operation is expected to be accompanied by a reduction in the quantities of additives used.

Recently, HBIS Tangshan Iron and Steel Group Co. Ltd. (HBIS Tangsteel), a Chinese steel producer, has awarded Primetals Technologies with the final acceptance certificate for two continuous galvanizing lines (CGL) installed as part of the expansion of cold rolling mill no. 2 at its Tangshan plant in Hebei Province. The CGLs 5 and 6 increase the production capacity for high-strength, coated metal sheets by 650,000 metric tons per annum. The sheets are mainly used by the automotive industry.

In May, PJSC “Ilyich Iron and Steel Works of Mariupol” (Ilyich Steel) issued the FAC for the revamp of its 1,700 mm hot strip mill (HSM 1700). The revamp of HSM 1700 further increases MMKI’s competitiveness through the extension of product mix and range, improvement of quality, increase of productivity and reduction of production costs. Production capacity will grow from 1.36 to 2.5 million tons per year. A state-of-the-art automation system makes the plant ready for Industry 4.0.
